Boudism

If you're any kind of Sydney-sider you should know who Daniel Boud is by now. The reigning scenester king of Sydney photography has pretty much photographed every happening person/place/party imaginable since he started his website in 2003, and shows no signs of slowing. Featured above are some beautiful shots of Cairns band 'The Medics'. Glorious.

Check out Boud's site here

Bordello

I hadn't heard of Gogol Bordello when I got the call yesterday to interview lead singer Eugene Hutz at the Metro. This Gypsy band of rag tags have two things in common, a love of New York, and a love of Gypsy music. Eugene himself moved to America from the Ukraine when he was 25, and takes pride in the fact that no two members of his nine-or-so member band are from the same country.

I've never been so close to a real life played-with-Madonna rockstar. It was intense. He was intense. I asked Eugene what inspired him. The Sun, the Moon, Father Earth and Mother Ocean. Then I gave him an Easter egg. He was only moderately impressed.

I urge you to check them out. If you like to have a good time and a dance and to get messy and slightly Russian, this band is for you. Headlining Byron Bay Blues Fest

The Dirty Bird

Many of you will remember when PETA activists got nude for, well everything really. These ladies above went topless to encourage a boycott of KFC.

With all these people getting nude around The Colonel I couldn't help but wonder... Do people eat KFC in the nude? Has anyone ever eaten it naked? Would you date someone that ate KFC in the nude? To me, eating KFC in the nude is a symbol of a broken human, someone who has thrown in the proverbial moist towlette, given up all notion of humanity and hygiene and greaseless surface areas...

Or it could just be a slippery delicious good time. I ponder.

The Temper Trap - Love Lost

Even though this album is over a year old I am yet to get sick of listening to it and fall more and more in love. Without a doubt one of the best Australian albums in years. Beautiful song. Beautiful clip.

Shhh... It's a

Secret. Squirrel.

I am digging what I see in secret Squirrels Winter Collection. Jah ok so heaps of it is stock standard indie wear but some of it is great including my new pants (above) and that little sleeeveless denim number that I'm sure I have seen in coco's wardrobe... Could it be she predicted ANOTHER fashion trend?!?!? Delightful!

Friday Food Salute - Tabouli

They may not be able to make peace, but boy do those Middle Easterners know how to make a tasty, low fat and refreshing salad. Refreshing? Salad? That doesn't even make sense you say! Incorrect my friends. Eating this delicious salad is like eating a cold glass of green codial on a hungover Sunday.

I have enjoyed tabouli on toasted sandwiches, with a piece of chicken or fish and on baked potatoes. International! Often forgotton and tarnished by the ugly pasta salad to its right in Woolies deli, give this green tub of a joy a chance. And maybe, just maybe we can bring Peace to the Middle East, one snack at a time.

Indie Rock and Roll For Me

The bands may come and go, but indie dance ain't going anywhere. Popular amongst teens, cool kids and sometimes scenesters, it seems every year bring another indie dance sensation to be loved until main stream getes its greasy sleazy mitts on them and the band and music ruined forever. 2010 will see 4 piece Manchester band Delphic hold that title.

Get on board before Nova and your 15 year old cousin do and check them out at either. The Beach Road this Saturday the 27th or Sunday 28th at Oxford Arts Factory. Or for my Melbourne viewers (Hi Nicole!) the Prince tonight. Tickets at moshtix. $35. Rad.

Book Review

I'll just pause for you to laugh at the words 'One woman's search for everything'. Done? Good.

As a soon-to-be traveller this book is as refreshing as it is inspiring. It's definately a girlie book, which I thought I might struggle with as a no-nonsense non-believer. I was proven wrong however. Just when you think you're about to recieve a steamy serving of extra cheese, the author drops something very intelligent on you, making you realise you can be girlie and cheesy and smart all at once.
Eat, Pray, Love is an autobiography of Liz, a 30+ New Yorker who leaves her unhappy marriage, suffers a horrible depression and seeks solice in an amazing year-long adventure through Italy, India and Indonesia, getting all foodie and spiritual on the way, studying with yoga masters etc. It is very well written and makes you think. I'll give it 4 chillis.
If you're having relationship problems, are about to go travelling, want to get spiritual or like food this is a book for you. Don't go if you're looking for steamy sex scenes, she doesn't have any.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Bought To You By The Letter T

I don't hide the fact that my dream job is to be a muppet. Not the hand that does the talking, or the voice, but an actual Muppet. What colour would my fur be? What would my 'thing' be? I like hats maybe? Over eating? Cookie's already covered that. Dad, whats a muppet? Not quite a mop, and not quite a puppet, so to answer your question, I don't know. In the world outside my mind and Simpsons quotes, Melbourne T-Shirt magazine T-World is celebrating Seasame Street's 40th annivesary with a pop up exhibition for design festival Semi Permenant. 8 T-Shirt designs celebrating your favourite characters will be on display in the city from this Friday to Sunday. More info here cause i'm too lazy.
Note: Gonzo and Animal were not from Seasame street I know, but I wanted to post this picture. Most underated Seasame street character? Barkley. Or the Yip Yip Yip's uh huh uhhuhuh

Love Songs & Dedications

After a lack of ipod, nothing but community radio at work and three weekends in row of Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and The Beatles hits done acoustically by us C&M (that would be us you jerks, not Australian fashion label Camilla & Marc, although that would be cool) I feel like my music knowledge and taste is becoming that of a middle age gypsy stoner. So much to my delight I stumbled across this super awesome tune by Riva Starr on Triple J the other day. It may be old, it may be new. Unsure and who cares its rad. Link below

Weren't we all Riva Starr, weren't were all.

NYC

I am rapidly becoming obsessed with NYC due to my imminent visit there later this year. Does anyone know some really sweet NYC blogs? Here are a few I have found

Overheard in New York - far superior to our overheard section in MX magazine (yawn)

NYC Bloggers - click on any railway station on the NY subway and be taken to a whole bunch of blogs by people that live there

New York Daily Photo - as the name suggests

New York Hack - Pictures from a New York City cab driver

It's going to look like Sesame St and blow my mind

Cazza Down Under

Julian Casablancas of The Strokes gave me a call yesterday to say 'whassup' and drop knowledge that he is heading to Aus to pimp his first solo album Phrazes for the Young. I don't know how well the album did but I thought most of it was - good. 3.5 chillis. He certainly knows how to write a catchy tune.

Friday, 6 May – Tivoli, BrisbaneSaturday
7 May – Palace Theatre, MelbourneSunday
8 May – Metro Theatre, Sydney

In addition to sweet nothings, he also whispered to be ready for a new Strokes album around September. Tix on sale 23rd March from... somewhere.

Typography. A subtle science, it's something that as a word lover, I have always been interested in. And always been crap at. The 'Go Font Yourself' exhibition "embraces letterforms as the inspiration for these works of art from international artists, designers and typographers. Whether it’s in the sweeping strokes and swashes or pixelated punctuation; the alphabet becomes the source for exploring lyrical modes of visual expression."

It truly is interesting. Don't be a hater. In Sydney at the Peer Gallery Gleve, 17/03/10.

Gaga for Gaga

I admit I have a slight obsession with Lady Gaga. I can't figure out why? She looks like a cross between an episode of Art Attack, loveable 90s sitcom character Blossom and a Marilyn Manson video clip.
29 year old Veik from Beijing feels the same way. Maybe a little more. He (or is it she?) has created some of LG's most memorable and favourite looks using Barbie, household items and voodoo magic. I would like one of these to add to my celebrity Barbie collection. I have Mary-Kate AND Ashley Olson (MK isn't smiling thats how i tell them apart) an original Peter Andre doll STILL IN THE BOX complete with abs and hairbrush and I once owned an MC Hammer doll who married our black Barbie. But they got divorced back in 1995 and MC was never to be seen again.
